- Pictures: 11 of the Best Cruise Ship Towel Animals

The reasoning given for the rumor is that the towel animals “take too much excessive time” and therefore detract from a stateroom attendant’s other duties as they clean multiple cabins. If you guessed "towel animals," you've been on a cruise before -- or have at least spent a lot of time here on Cruise Critic. Carnival isn't the only line that has the animals these days, so we asked our Facebook fans to share their favorite photos from their own cruise experiences. They certainly delievered—swinging monkeys, entire menageries, even life-sized humans all folded from stacks of white terry cloth.

Carnival Cruise Lines’ “towel animals” – whimsical terry cloth creatures that greet guests as they return to their staterooms each evening – are an iconic element of the “Fun Ship” vacation experience. One of the fun surprises my family and I look forward to on each Carnival cruise are the towel animals made by our stateroom steward during turndown service each night. The sizes, expressions and poses of towel animals can vary, all depending on the cabin steward’s creativity and what towels they choose for each creation. Guests who hope to find their favorite towel animal can always ask their steward about a particular animal or leave a note with a polite request. Take a peek at 11 of the best cruise ship towel animals submitted by our readers, and post your favorites on Cruise Critic's Facebook page.

Towel Creations is available in the gift shops aboard all Carnival ships, as well as from the line’s stateroom stewards. The book can also be ordered via the Gifts & Services section of carnival.com and delivered to guests’ staterooms. I have sailed with Carnival a few times now, but I still attend their towel folding classes on every single sailing as I just love making those towel animals. When towel animals appear in your cabin, you are welcome to keep them around throughout the cruise, but it can be helpful to the cabin steward if you gently disassemble any you don’t need to keep.

With your left hand grab the two tips on the left and with your right hand grab the two tips on the right and pull them gently apart (step 8 and 9). Fold the towel in half again so half the crease is facing downwards and the other half is on the top (step 5). Flip the towel over so the crease is facing downwards (step 4). I was happy to see that a portion of the book proceeds go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital – a cause that is near to my heart, along with Carnival’s. It is a small, but helpful way to give back while I’m on vacation. Sadly, I had to stay cooped up in the room because of severe sunburn.
Towel animals, left behind by room stewards during turndown service, are one of cruise travel's longest-standing traditions. (The towel dodo bird reportedly made an appearance on Titanic.) And it's clear that cruisers have a profound love affair with these creatures. It’s been 20 years since Carnival debuted its first towel animal — an industry first that has since been much replicated across the cruise industry. And with 10 million Carnival towel animals folded each year, each creation is the culmination of hours of training and creativity from Carnival’s housekeeping staff, who service more than 29,000 staterooms fleetwide. With towels in hand, we made our way to the ship’s theater for the class having plenty of space to create. We were greeted by a huge collection of towel animals on display – it was exciting to see so many of them in one place.

Passengers can even request their favorite towel friends, and many travelers save their menagerie throughout their cruise to enjoy a growing zoo every day. Some of the favorite towel animals onboard include the long-necked dinosaur, quirky pig, romantic swans, the monkey or bat hanging from the stateroom ceiling, or even the bear, stingray, rabbit, or bullfrog. A new rumor circulating online has announced that starting November 1, Carnival Cruise Line will be implementing a new policy ending the practice of placing “towel animals” in guests’ staterooms. Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has spoken out about another rumor circulating on social media, this time addressing the cruise line’s beloved towel animals. Such rumors are easily spread but without substance, yet can still be of concern to eager cruise travelers. I do feel that the days of towel animals are coming to an end.

I am so glad our room steward left them there and did not change them out daily. I have not read everyone's replies, but I have cruise on the large, medium, and smaller Carnival ships. I just got off the Fascination the 7th of this month, and they are still doing the towel animals. I know sometimes on the bigger ships, they do the towel animals on the lido deck also, and have many sitting out around the pool area for everyone to see.

Carnival Cruises literally wrote the book on these animals (Carnival Towel Creations, which sells about 6,000 copies each month), and it first appeared on the company's cruise ships about 15 years ago. As Myszewski tells the story, a housekeeping member from Thailand started folding his guest’s clothes into the shapes of animals while making the rounds; guests liked it, and other staff members picked up the technique and moved onto towels. Cruise passengers don’t have to wait for the evening turndown service or ask their steward to see their favorite towel animals, however.

Instead, I bring along a small notebook to jot down notes during the week. There are wi-fi capabilities onboard (for a fee) and if you need your online ‘fix’, stop by the Internet Cafe to check in with your friends at home. If you elect not to purchase FTTF, then you will have the option of purchasing the DIY book from your room steward. If purchased in port you may be subject to local state taxes as well.
More exotic creations do appear as well, including stingrays, seals, bears, snails, rabbits, turtles and anteaters. Carnival Cruise Line even goes a bit further with its towel animals. Puppets of the most popular animals are unofficial hosts before evening shows in the main lounge, each cruise has a Towel Animal Theater puppet show for young cruisers and guests can even buy a book on Carnival’s towel folding techniques. Here is a family pic of all of our towel animals from our time on the Carnival Breeze. Yes we kept them on the couch all week so we could enjoy them.
Perfect your own favorite towel animal with the following tutorials from the towel animal experts at Carnival Cruise Line. You'll have a mini-zoo full of new, slightly starched friends in no time. If they prefer, guests can ask attendants to skip the towel animals altogether.
John was laughing quite a bit at my crazy excitement over the towel animal monkey. This was the first time I had seen the monkey and well monkeys are one of my favorite things so it was an amazing way to end our cruise on the Carnival Breeze. I have to confess that one of my favorite parts of cruising with Carnival is the towel animals. I look forward to seeing them in our room each night when we come back from dinner. You just can’t help but smile when you see a giant towel animal dinosaur or frog in your room.
Most stewards even add eyes and nostrils to their creations, and some may even add accessories to personalize the friends, such as sunglasses, caps, beads, rose petals or other accents. Get all your cruise accessories for your next cruise vacation. We started day one on the Carnival Breeze with this peacock/turkey. I am honestly not sure which one it is but I loved walking into our room and finding it on the bed.
I just loved seeing the smiles on my girls’ faces as we entered the room. During our last cruise, I discovered that there is a towel animal folding class during each sailing and I quickly marked it down on my family’s ‘must do’ list. The thought of learning how to make our own towel animals was exciting and I just knew it would be a great way for us to spend time together on our trip. I love walking the decks and seeing the creativity and care that goes into each of the Carnival Cruise Towel Animals. Here are some of our favorite towel animals from our Carnival Cruises. If you love Carnival Cruise towel animals I have to share with you my favorite way to see tons of towel animals.
My girls find it so magical and it’s always a topic of discussion at dinner every evening, trying to decide what type of towel animal might be greeting us when we return to our stateroom. They are still doing them and the extra towels come in handy since the cut the number of times cleaning the rooms. To create the head of your towel dog, lay out your second towel flat on the floor just like you layed out your first towel (step 1) and fold in half the long way (step 2). Congratulations, you have created the body of your towel dog (step 10) where the head will be placed on later. Slightly pull out the little tips of the towel, of the four little roles you created (step 6 and 7) to make the “paws” and give the legs some shape. Lay one of the towels out flat in front of you (step 1) and roll one side of the towel to the middle from the shorter end (step 2) and do the same with the other side (step 3).
While they aren’t as common on more reserved cruise lines, they can still make surprise appearances, particularly if there are younger cruisers in the cabin. We spoke to three Carnival Cruise Line stateroom stewards -- with a combined 37 years of experience in making towel animals -- about the art of towel-folding and which animals are the most popular. It turns out that puppies and elephants are perennial favorites, along with the cheeky monkey. Animals with whiskers seem the hardest to make; a mouse was voted the most difficult towel animal to master, followed by a cat and rabbit. Carnival is famous for their towel animals that brighten up your day and put a smile on your face. I am sure other cruise lines make them as well, but I have mostly seen them on Carnival ships.
